July 2002

We are blessed to live in an area which has

much greenery, forests and trees. Around our world areas are marked by different special features. One feature I should love to see are the great Redwoods of America.

The Great Redwoods can grow two or three hundred feet tall and be hundreds of years old. One is so large a hole was cut through its trunk large enough for car to drive through!

You would think that a tree so colossal in size must have enormously deep roots. Amazingly they don’t, the water they live on comes from surface moisture taken in through their shallow root system. How on earth do they keep standing? BY NOT STANDING ALONE Their root systems interlock and intertwine into a vast patchwork mat of roots. When storms and strong winds come they support and sustain one another.

As Christians we also need to spread our roots and interlock, joining with other Christians. This is why attending Church regularly is so important. It is vital as a source of encouragement and inspiration both for us to receive as well as to give.

This month can I say – like the great Redwoods – don’t stand alone! It’s true – "You don’t have to go to Church to be a Christian". But it’s also true "You go to Church because you are a Christian". I look forward to sharing with you over the coming month.

Yours in His Service
